Servers and Taperers
Would you like to be a Server or a Taperer?
A Server 'dresses' the Altar ready for a service with cross and candles. He or she puts out the bread and wine with the special plates (patens) and cups (chalices) together with special linen, ready for the Eucharist or Hol Communion. A Server will also make sure that service books on the altar are prepared and open at the correct page for the day ready for the Priest. Servers are also responsible for clearing the altar after a service and seeing that everything is put away safely.
A Taperer is someone who carries a candle, usually in a special large candlestick. He or she will take part in processions and in particular will accompany the Priest for the Gospel reading. A Server assists at the preparation of the Eucharist. You do not have to be confirmed to be a Taperer, but you do to be a Server.
To be a Server is a great privilege. They have an important role to play in the life of the Church. Servers assist the Priest at the altar and so are more closely associated with the Priest than is any other member of the congregation.
A Server needs to be regular and punctual in his or her duties. He or she needs to be quiet in action, meticulous in preparation, never appear to be in a hurry and have an ability to concentrate on what he/she is doing.
